History
After a series of organizational meetings, the Lions Club of Sunderland was granted its charter from The International Association of Lions Clubs on October 7, 1955. The club was sponsored by the Cannington Lions Club and the charter president was William Doyle. Long serving charter members included Keith Rynard, Bob Young and Ewen McCrimmon. The chartering of the club of 23 charter members was celebrated on November 2, 1955 in a special ceremony at the Sunderland Town Hall. Initially, the club met at the Brock House Hotel but after a year decided to have their meetings and meals at the Sunderland Town Hall catered by the Vroomanton U.C.W. In 1955, our club was assigned to District A-7. Since then, because of the rapid growth of clubs, we were assigned to two new districts; A-12 from 1972 to 1976 and A-16 from 1976 to the present. The club has been instrumental in the organization and sponsoring of five new Lions Clubs over the years. We are proud to say that three of those clubs, Brechin, Udora- Leaskdale and Greenbank are still very active today. Three of our members, Bill McDougall, Stan Durward and Dale St. John have served the association as District Governors. Early fundraisers included street dances and bingos with service donations presented in support of the town hall, the arena, the park and youth activities. The Music Festival, now in its 59th year was organized in 1958 as a one day event. A Festival of Stars Concert concluded the festival as it does to this day. With substantial growth in membership and solid fundraising initiatives the club has been able to extend its services and take a leadership role in many recreational, educational, environmental, health related and cultural pursuits within our local and world communities.
